High above Healdsburg’s Russian River, a newly constructed winery offers sweeping views through its impressive 50-foot glass wall. The location on Westside Road places it among renowned Pinot Noir producers such as Williams Selyem and Rochioli.
At first glance, the grand design suggests ownership by a corporate giant or a tech entrepreneur, but the winery belongs to Auteur Wines—a small, family-run producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that has remained relatively low-profile for over two decades.
From Humble Beginnings to Cult Status Through Passion and Precision
Auteur Wines began in 2003 as a passion project for Kenneth and Laura Juhasz, with Kenneth balancing winemaking at Sonoma’s Donum Estate alongside his own small production. The winery’s focus on coastal vineyards and a meticulous approach to winemaking earned it a loyal but niche following.
In 2007, a glowing 100-point review from a respected wine critic propelled Auteur into the spotlight, triggering a wave of demand from collectors who discovered it through online wine forums.

Despite its newfound reputation, Auteur maintained an understated presence. The couple opened a tasting room in Sonoma Plaza in 2012, housed in a modest bungalow without signage.
What it lacked in visibility, it made up for in enthusiastic gatherings, with its wine club parties drawing large crowds. Auteur also became known for changing perceptions of Chardonnay, winning over skeptics with its refined and balanced style, a departure from the richer, oak-driven versions of the past.
A Thoughtful Expansion Blending Modern Design with Authentic Wine Experiences
In 2021, Auteur took a major step forward by purchasing a former hops ranch on Westside Road. The property’s existing permits made it an ideal choice for expansion, and with financial support from two additional couples, the Juhaszes began constructing their new winery.
The building embraces a modern yet understated aesthetic, using natural wood elements and large windows to create a seamless connection with the surrounding vineyards. Unlike the more rustic feel of their Sonoma space, the new tasting room delivers a refined yet welcoming environment.
The winery offers a variety of tasting experiences, ranging from traditional guided flights to more experimental formats. One unique option, the Be Here Now experience ($40), removes all descriptions, allowing guests to form their own impressions before discussing the wines.
Food pairings, including an artisanal cheese board ($50) and fresh bread with cultured butter ($10), further enhance the visit. While the expansion marks a significant milestone for Auteur, the Juhaszes remain dedicated to their original vision—focusing on quality over scale and allowing their wines to speak for themselves.
