Spain’s Wine Exports Grow in Value but Decline in Volume as UK Becomes Top Market

In 2024, Spain’s wine exports experienced a growth in value but a decrease in volume, according to the latest findings from the Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino (OEMV). The value of exports rose by 1.4%, reaching €2.98 billion ($3.13 billion), marking the second-highest value on record for the country.

However, export volumes fell by 5%, totaling approximately 1.9 billion liters. The OEMV noted that the best year for Spain’s wine exports in terms of value was 2022, with figures slightly exceeding €3 billion.

The UK Leads Spanish Wine Exports, While Germany Experiences Decline in Value and Volume

The United Kingdom emerged as the primary market for Spanish bottled wines in 2024, leading both in value and volume. Spanish wine exports to the UK grew by 1% in value, reaching €252 million, while volumes increased by 1.6% to 84.3 million liters.

The United States followed as the second-largest market, with a 5.6% rise in value, totaling €246.7 million. Other significant markets, such as The Netherlands, saw strong growth in both value and volume, with the Netherlands increasing 13.7% in value and 9.1% in volume.

Germany, historically a key market for Spanish wine, experienced a drop in both value and volume. In 2024, the value of Spanish wine exports to Germany fell by 6.5% to €172.3 million, while volumes dropped by 6% to 76.4 million liters, making it the second-largest market by volume. Despite this decline, Germany remains a significant market for Spanish wine, ranking third in value.

Spanish bulk wine exports, which are wines shipped in containers larger than 10 liters, showed mixed results in 2024. The value of bulk wine exports increased by 1.7%, reaching €523.6 million, while volumes fell by 6.9% to 1 billion liters. Bulk wine exports have seen a gradual shift, with value growth despite the overall volume decline, reflecting changing global market dynamics and consumer preferences.

The Rioja wine region saw impressive growth in its exports in 2024. According to the Rioja region’s control board, exports grew by more than 4%, with more than 98.8 million liters of Rioja wine sold internationally. The UK remained the largest market for Rioja outside Spain, with volume exports growing by 12% to nearly 32.4 million liters.

The United States also showed strong growth, with volume sales increasing by 17% to 10.4 million liters. However, Germany, the third-largest market for Rioja, saw a slight decline in exports, with volumes dropping by 5%.
