Disable Google Search Wiki

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

To disable search wiki, just add the following to the end of the url after doing a search:

&pws=0

You can also sign out of google’s personal web search program in your account settings.   Even if you do not use the search wiki to vote results up or down, google does appear to be trending and custom tailoring results based upon your traffic patterns.  In doing SEO, it is important to know that the results you are looking at are not biased.

Open Platform Breaks Down Walls

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Opening up API’s and access to content driven sites, especially in the case of Guardian News Media Group, heralds in a new and refreshing approach to online by a transitioning traditional media group. In days of yore nomadic brutish types would stand on bridges and charge arbitrary taxes for crossing them. In many ways, this old keeper of the keys mentality should have died years ago and has no place existing. Even the music industry has been quick to adapt, and we’re already seeing the music-as-a-singular-unit model fall away as Spotify tears down walls, and merely offers a light tax for those who wish to dwell – but is also fine for passers through to just listen to the occasional advertisement.

Customize The WordPress Contact Form 7 Plugin

Friday, March 13th, 2009

I ran into an interesting problem the other day.    I’m a big fan of the Contact Form 7.  I’ve used it on many of the wordpress sites I’ve developed, and appreciate the plugin for its simple integration, nice admin interface, and the pretty ajax functionality.

Unfortunately, I recently discovered that the plugin does not allow you to specify custom landing page urls, or Thank You pages for the contact form.  Some of you may wonder why I care about reloading the page to say thank you vs. the sleak Ajax popup confirming that your message has been delivered.  The answer: Because I’m trying to measure performance of the contact form within my Adwords CPC account. I’ve been thinking more about the future of the web, and I’m convinced what’s coming is not just another phase or version, but finally the real deal. Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 are going to be looked back on as alpha and beta versions of the real Web which is finally upon us. Techies refer to it as the semantic web, which is going to be a big part of it, but ultimately it’s going to come down to making money for businesses. Every enterprise out there is finally understanding the importance of engaging the online medium and utilizing the communities and tools built over the past decade that have captured the attention and time of the consumer. There’s a really cool site I’ve found that’s seeming to capitalize on this opportunity… fittingly enough it’s called Local.com

HBW! (Cherry blossoms trio)

This is an update to a post I wrote last year after first discovering Zemanta, a blog tool/firefox add-on that makes intelligent real time contextual recommendations based on the content you’re writing. These recommendations come in the form of pictures, links, tags, and related articles. I’ve been using it for about 8 months now, and have to say, it’s probably the most useful Firefox add-on, let alone web tool in general, that I’ve found. The pictures and link recommendations are becoming more relevant over time, showing the creators’ legit semantic engine skillz, and the tag generation is a priceless feature for annotating posts with meta information. They’ve recently enhanced the magic by integrating the tool into Gmail and Yahoo mail!
