[...] If you have a product or a service that you offer, chances are you want to use every method possible to spread the word. You have many options to broaden your client/customer base, including one of the most popular, and a service we offer - viral marketing. Affiliate Networking is a type of viral marketing, it serves as great linkbait for viral campaigning, and even better, it acts as an entire sales team motivated and working to build your business. The affiliate broadcasts your product to their entire audience, and you have no ongoing marketing costs unless there is a sale. [...]

[...] I write to you as a firmly established member of what is typically called “Generation Y” and I have a bone to pick. Mainly it is a result of a recent phenomenon in the community, one I like to refer to as the “dumbing down of wine.” It seems to be an increasingly popular opinion that in order to bring wine to younger and newer audiences, wine needs to be brought down to “our level”. Unfortunately for the marketers it is almost instinctive by now that we will reject most things that people attempt to target to us. We like to adopt things ourselves. Look at the successes and failures in mainstream viral marketing. Most things that succeed do so because young people want to have them, not because they were told they need to have them.
What is wrong with Viral Marketing? The whole reason is it viral is because people enjoy watching it and send it on to others. This is how the whole system works?

People often do realise that they are forwarding an advertisement but don't really care because it is funny. I just wish more ads on TV were as funny as the viral ones we have :D

Excellent post, Russ! I agree - too often people look at a powerful medium like viral marketing and say, "That's great but it won't work for us." That's like saying word-of-mouth doesn't work for us. And no business owner will make that claim. Viral is just another form of WoM or buzz, but online, which allows it to spread much faster to a much broader audience. In fact, the more standard (or dare I say commodity) a product industry is, the greater the opportunity to stand out and get yourself noticed virally, as your competitors remain too busy partaking in me-too promotions and marketing campaigns.
