Unti- Dry Creek Valley

This was a real find. Unti is a limited production, family owned Dry-Creek vineyard specialising in red varietals with small lots of Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese,unti-grenache.jpg Grenache, Barbera and Petite Syrah. I love this sort of thing because it’s so nice to see a California winery that isn’t completely market driven, and has the chutzpah to experiment with many different varietals. The Unti 2004 Grenache is a perfect example how resisting the predominant trends in one’s region, though a bold and brave step, often its dividends. Though the varietals may be Rhone-style, the California sunshine really opens up the Grenache to make a full bodied, fruity . However digging deeper beyond the fruit, the Syrah adds an aroma of dew-soaked violets whilst lending a spice to the which is nicely rounded. With 14.9% this is quite a kicker, but at least its within the current California blockbuster style. This is well worth keeping an eye out for.
